100, based on metrics such as earnings growth and P\/E ratios.\u00a0 However, there are <\/strong><strong>a number of problems with relying on such composite scores to make investment decisions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>My research shows that in order to zero in on ideal stocks to buy, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">we need to look at multiple factors, including<\/span>:<br \/><\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li><strong>the stock&#8217;s fundamentals<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>the stock&#8217;s technical position<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>the industry group<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>the sector<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>the status of the overall market<\/strong><br \/><br \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Note:\u00a0 an example of bringing all these elements together is shown in the article &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/straussresearch.com\/index.php\/managing-data-effectively\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Managing Data Effectively<\/a>&#8221; in the &#8220;Why Unique and Valuable&#8221; section of this blog.<br \/><br \/><\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The technical component is also very valuable for selling<\/span>.\u00a0 William O&#8217;Neil states that in many cases, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">stocks will still have good fundamentals when they are peaking and should be sold<\/span>.\u00a0<br \/><br \/><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>A good example was provided by the technology stocks of the late 1990&#8217;s, such as Cisco Systems (CSCO), which made dramatic upward moves until they finally peaked in March 2000.\u00a0 When these stocks were near their highs, their fundamentals still looked good and all the analysts gave them &#8220;buy&#8221; ratings, but the technical developments indicated that they were peaking and should be sold.\u00a0 From March 2000 until 2003, most of these stocks dropped sharply and the Nasdaq plunged by almost 80%.\u00a0<\/strong><strong><br \/><br \/><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>My technical analysis approach is based on extensive study of\u00a0 a large variety of professional material, including the \u201cChart School\u201d program from <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Investor\u2019s Business Daily,<\/span> which provides <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">detailed case studies of both buying and selling<\/span>.\u00a0<br \/><br \/><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>This is extremely valuable information which is not taught in the CFA program.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My investment experience has been focused on growth stocks.\u00a0 Both fundamental and technical analysis are important in making buy and sell decisions.
