{"id":760,"date":"2019-12-28T20:22:49","date_gmt":"2019-12-28T20:22:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/straussresearch.com\/?page_id=760"},"modified":"2020-01-15T21:46:12","modified_gmt":"2020-01-15T21:46:12","slug":"managing-data-effectively","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/straussresearch.com\/index.php\/managing-data-effectively\/","title":{"rendered":"Managing Data Effectively"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-page\" data-elementor-id=\"760\" class=\"elementor elementor-760\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-2d2106e elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"2d2106e\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-ff33947\" data-id=\"ff33947\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-08df47b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"08df47b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>When buying a stock, the odds of strong performance are improved when multiple factors are all aligned, including:<\/strong><\/p><ol><li><strong>the stock&#8217;s fundamentals<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>the stock&#8217;s technical position<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>the industry group<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>the sector<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>the status of the overall market.<\/strong><\/li><\/ol><p><strong>Identifying such situations can make a major contribution to investment performance. <\/strong><\/p><p><strong>This means that the weekly research process should include <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">a complete review of charts and data, covering the status of the overall market, sectors, industry groups, and individual stocks.<\/span><\/strong><\/p><p><strong>For example, one of my reports contains a case study showing how a well-designed research process reaches the conclusion that we should buy electronic gaming stock Take Two Interactive (TTWO) in April 2017\u00a0 (note:\u00a0 I have also written a brief summary of this situation in a PDF file:\u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/straussresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Strauss-3page-C.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3 page report<\/a> ).<\/strong><\/p><p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The research process should proceed in a top down manner<\/span>, first assessing the status of the overall market, then sectors and groups, and finally individual stocks.<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>As seen in Figure 1 below, in late April 2017, the condition of the overall market was bullish, and the S&amp;P 500 had just broken through a downward-sloping trendline, indicating the end of a two-month market pullback.<\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Figure 1\u00a0 S&amp;P 500\u00a0 \u00a0daily chart &#8212; it had just broken out to a new high<\/span>, after consolidating to its 50-day moving average.\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">This technical &#8220;buy&#8221; signal would be spotted by the weekly research process.<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Strong industry group<\/span> &#8212; other stocks in the electronic gaming group were also acting well.<\/strong><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Strong sector<\/span> &#8212; the technology sector had good relative strength.<\/strong><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Good market conditions<\/span> &#8212; the overall market was in a long-term uptrend and was just emerging from a two-month pullback.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><p><strong><br \/><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">TTWO then went on to outperform the S&amp;P 500 by a wide margin for the rest of 2017, with a gain of 75% vs. 12% for the index<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-600e3da elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"600e3da\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-5114eba\" data-id=\"5114eba\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cde6cbf elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"cde6cbf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"725\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/straussresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/TTWO-W-outperform-2017.png?fit=1024%2C725&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-781\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/straussresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/TTWO-W-outperform-2017.png?w=1200&amp;ssl=1 1200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/straussresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/TTWO-W-outperform-2017.png?resize=300%2C213&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/straussresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/TTWO-W-outperform-2017.png?resize=1024%2C725&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/straussresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/TTWO-W-outperform-2017.png?resize=768%2C544&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-0e3632e elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"0e3632e\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-2e88db6\" data-id=\"2e88db6\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f245c7a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f245c7a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>In order to find such situations, in addition to watching the overall market, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">we need to consistently monitor the behavior of sectors, industry groups, and individual stocks, as well as fundamental data on stocks<\/span>.<\/strong><\/p><p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">To facilitate this analysis, I have developed pattern recognition software and data management procedures<\/span> covering sectors, industry groups, and over 1,100 individual stocks and ETFs.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>By using charting software and databases effectively, we can <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">cut through the information overload,<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">zero in on those stocks with good fundamentals and bullish chart patterns<\/span>, which are also in strong industry groups and sectors.<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>My research shows that <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">this approach adds a lot of value beyond <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">using composite scores from equity qua<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">nt syste<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ms that rank stocks on a scale of 1 \u2013 100<\/span>, or <\/strong><strong>selecting stocks based on the fundamentals only.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p><p><strong>At any given time, the vast majority of all stocks in the market are given &#8220;Buy&#8221; ratings from analysts who follow the companies.\u00a0 Therefore we need another level of analysis to determine which ones are likely to outperform.<\/strong><\/p><p><strong><br \/>Note:\u00a0 in the example above, the electronic gaming stocks were attractive in April 2017 because they had good relative strength.\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">However, this does not mean that we always want to simply buy stocks with good relative strength<\/span>.\u00a0 It depends on the condition of the overall market.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p><p><strong>For example, if the overall market were overbought, stocks with good relative strength would be even more overbought, meaning they would be vulnerable to a sharp selloff if the market goes into a correction.\u00a0 Therefore we need to use some decision making rules that depend on market conditions.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>These issues are discussed further in the article entitled &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/straussresearch.com\/index.php\/a-rule-based-approach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A Rule-Based Approach instead of Statistics<\/a>.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When buying a stock, the odds of strong performance are improved when multiple factors are all aligned, including: the stock&#8217;s fundamentals the stock&#8217;s technical position the industry group the sector the status of the overall market.
